El 21 de Mayo es el cumple de
Luc-Olivier Merson, pintor e ilustrador académico francés nacido en 1846, también conocido por sus diseños de sellos y monedas.
Creció en un hogar artístico, hijo de Charles-Olivier Merson, pintor y crítico de arte. Estudió bajo la dirección de Gustave Chassevent en la École de Dessin y después con Isidore Pils en la École des Beaux-Arts. Merson vio su primera obra expuesta en el Salón de París en 1866 y tres años más tarde fue galardonado con el Prix de Rome. Durante los cinco años que pasó trabajando en Italia, se concentró en temas religiosos e históricos.

De regreso a Francia, en 1875 ganó la medalla del primer premio en la exposición de la Société des Artistes Français. "Notre-Dame de Paris", una de sus pinturas más conocidas, fue creada en 1881 como resultado de la enorme popularidad de la novela de Victor Hugo del mismo nombre. Con su mística imaginería gótica, su estilo refleja la influencia del movimiento simbolista que evolucionaba por aquél entonces.

Merson realizó importantes encargos decorativos para instituciones como el Palacio de Justicia, el Museo Louis Pasteur y el mosaico en la bóveda del santuario de la Basílica del Sacré Cœur. También hizo las ilustraciones para las vidrieras, un ejemplo de las cuales se puede encontrar en la iglesia la Santa Trinidad de la plaza Rittenhouse en Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Su perfil fue aumentado considerablemente después de haber sido galardonado con una medalla de oro por su pintura en la Exposition Universelle de 1889, y en 1892 fue elegido para la Académie des Beaux-arts.
El diseño "tipo Merson" 1900 aún era utilizado en 1927 por las oficinas de correos francesas en Egipto; el nombre de Merson es apenas visible en la parte inferior izquierda del marco.

Después de graduarse de UNC, Holloman se trasladó a Chicago para trabajar con el Piven Theatre Workshop. Estudió con John Lynn en Los Ángeles, y trabajó en la producción independiente de David Orr "Blossom Time". En 2012 Holloman realizó dos muestras individuales: Coeur libre y Free Falling. Recibió críticas favorables por Free Falling, que se presentó en el Ateneo Veneto de Venecia, Italia. La crítica de arte Lea Mattarella reseñó las obras de Holloman en La Repubblica: "Las pinturas de Holloman nos llevan a otros lugares, y al final, de esto es de lo que se trata el arte". En abril de 2013 presentó la exposición individual "All The World Inside", en el Palazzo Italia, en Berlín, Alemania. Su pintura "Swell" fue elegida para formar parte del espectáculo colectivo titulado "Nell 'Acqua Capisco" en la Bienal de Venecia, 2013. Holloman ganó el primer puesto en la disciplina de pintura en la Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo de 2014 en Argentina. Presentó dos obras en la Bienal de Florencia en 2015 y ganó un premio por "Into the Woods". En noviembre de 2015 realizó una exposición individual en la Menier Gallery de Londres titulada "The Innocents". Su primera muestra individual titulada "Everglow" se celebró en Amstelveen, Países Bajos entre julio y agosto de 2016 en el Museo Jan Van der Togt.

Jean-Baptiste Pillement, pintor y diseñador francés nacido en Lyon en 1728, conocido por sus exquisitos y delicados paisajes, pero cuya importancia radica principalmente en los grabados realizados a partir de sus dibujos, su influencia en la difusión del estilo rococó y en particular el gusto por la "chinoiserie" (chinería) por toda Europa.

En 1743, a los 15 años, se trasladó de Lyon a París, donde fue empleado como aprendiz de diseñador en la fábrica de Gobelin. En 1745 se fue para España, donde permaneció durante 5 años. Allí encontró empleo en varias ciudades como diseñador y pintor. En 1750, a los 22 años, se trasladó a Lisboa, donde disfrutó de éxito continuo. Sus ansias de viajar le obligaron a rechazar una oferta para convertirse en primer pintor al rey José de Portugal ?, y en 1754 dejó Lisboa por Londres. Pillement pasó ocho años en Inglaterra, aprovechando al máximo el gusto inglés por los paisajes. En 1763 viajó a Viena, donde trabajó en la Corte Imperial de María Teresa y Francisco I.

En 1765 dejó Viena por Varsovia. También trabajó más tarde en San Petersburgo, el Piamonte, Milán, Roma y Venecia. Entre 1768-1780 volvió a trabajar en Francia, donde fue empleado por Marie Antoinette en el Petit Trianon. En1780-1789 volvió a estar en la Península Ibérica, y en 1789 se trasladó a Pézenas en el Languedoc. En 1800 regresó a Lyon, donde continuó pintando mientras también diseñaba para la industria de la seda y daba lecciones en la Academia fundada por Napoleón. Permaneció en su Lyon natal hasta su muerte en 1808.

Mallock", que junto a River of the Damned se hizo tan popular que ganó un premio a la mejor innovación de Rivers. Un día Phillips fue a un librero con la intención expresa de comprar un libro barato para usar como la base de un proyecto artístico. Compró al azar una novela llamada "Un documento humano" del autor Victorian William Hurrell Mallock, y comenzó un largo proyecto para crear arte a partir de sus páginas. Pintó, hizo collages o dibuja sobre las páginas, dejando parte del texto asomando a través de serpentinas formas de burbujas, creando un texto "encontrado" con su propia historia, diferente de la original. Personajes de la novela de Mallock aparecen en la nueva historia, pero el protagonista es un nuevo personaje llamado "Bill Toge", cuyo apellido sólo puede aparecer en páginas que originalmente contenían palabras como "juntos" o "en conjunto". La historia de Toge es una meditación sobre el amor no correspondido y la lucha por crear y apreciar el arte.
Varias ediciones de "A Humument" han sido publicadas a lo largo de los años, con más páginas revisadas cada vez. La sexta y última edición fue publicada en 2016.
A finales de los años noventa Phillips era una figura establecida en la mayoría de los aspectos de las artes. Aurel Băeşu, pintor impresionista y retratista rumano nacido en 1896. Muchas de sus obras muestran la influencia de Nicolae Grigorescu, una influencia bastante común entre los pintores de su generación.

En 1928 murió de tuberculosis, con sólo treinta y dos años. Una retrospectiva importante de su trabajo se celebró en 2006 en el museo de arte en Bacău. En 2012 su tumba fue saqueada y destruida. Entre los objetos robados había una placa hecha por el amigo de Băeşu, el escultor Mihai Onofrei.

Mario Avati, pintor y grabador francés nacido en 1921 en el Principado de Mónaco, que vivió y trabajó en París.
Después de estudiar en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Decorativas de Niza y la Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de París, Avati, practicó a partir de 1947 con todas las técnicas de grabado. Diez años más tarde se orientó casi exclusivamente a la técnica de la media tinta (mezzotint), al principio en negro, y luego, a partir de 1969, en color. On May 21 is the birthday of
Luc-Olivier Merson, French academic painter and illustrator born in 1846, also known for his postage stamp and currency designs.
He grew up in an artistic household, the son of Charles-Olivier Merson, a painter and art critic. He studied under Gustave Chassevent at the École de Dessin and then Isidore Pils at the École des Beaux-Arts. Merson had his first work exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1866 and three years later was awarded the Prix de Rome. During the five years spent working in Italy, he concentrated on religious and historical subjects for his art.
Back in France, in 1875 he won the first-prize medal at the exhibition by the Société des artistes français. "Notre-Dame de Paris," one of Merson's best known paintings, was created in 1881 as a result of the huge popularity of the Victor Hugo novel of the same name. With its mystical Gothic imagery, its style reflects the influence of the then evolving Symbolist movement.
Merson did major decorative commissions for such institutions as the Palais de Justice, the Louis Pasteur Museum, and the mosaic in the chancel vault in the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur. He also did the artwork for stained-glass windows, an example of which can be found in the Church of the Holy Trinity Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His profile was raised considerably after being awarded a gold medal for his painting at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, and in 1892 he was elected to the Académie des beaux-arts.
The "Type Merson" design of 1900 was still being used in 1927 for the French post offices in Egypt; Merson's name is barely visible in the lower left of the frame.
By 1900 Merson was designing postage stamps for the French post and the Monaco post. By 1908 he had been contracted by the Bank of France to create a number of designs for some of the country's banknotes. Between 1906 and 1911 he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts, with students such as Clément Serveau, who would also eventually design stamps and banknotes himself. He took over the family farm aged 24 after his father's death. He had produced drawings since he was a child and his talent was recognised by the museum curator in Cherbourg, who gained Fouace two municipal bursaries from Cherbourg to study art in Paris (as had his predecessor from Cotentin, Jean-François Millet). There he studied under Adolphe Yvon before setting up a studio as a portrait painter. He then fought in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1870, three years after arriving in Paris, he exhibited at the Paris Salon. In 1873 he exhibited his first still lifes.
After the war he moved permanently to Paris with his wife, the daughter of a pharmacist in Cherbourg who he had married in 1874. However, he did not forget the Cotentin - in 1878 he painted 19 canvases of biblical scenes such as the Annunciation, Flight from Egypt and the journey of the Magi for the vaults of the church at Montfarville, while for its choir he painted a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper.

She attended the University of North Carolina where she graduated with a degree in Performance Communication. She appeared in numerous theater productions in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as in Chicago and London. Painting
In 2012, Holloman had two solo shows: Coeur libre and Free Falling. She received favorable reviews for Free Falling, which was held at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, Italy. Art critic Lea Mattarella reviewed Holloman's works in La Repubblica: "Holloman's paintings take us elsewhere, and at the end of the day, this is what art is all about". In April 2013, Holloman exhibited in a solo show "All The World Inside", at Palazzo Italia, in Berlin, Germany. Holloman's painting, "Swell", was chosen to be part of the group show entitled "Nell' Acqua Capisco" at the Venice Biennale, 2013. Holloman won 1st Place in Discipline Painting at the 2014 Contemporary Art Biennale of Argentina. Holloman had two entries in the 2015 Florence Biennale and won a prize for "Into the Woods". In November 2015 she had a solo show at the Menier Gallery in London titled "The Innocents". Holloman's first solo museum show entitled "Everglow" was held in Amstelveen, Netherlands from July 2016 through August 2016 in the Museum Jan Van der Togt.

Jean-Baptiste Pillement, French painter and designer born in Lyon in 1728, known for his exquisite and delicate landscapes, but whose importance lies primarily in the engravings done after his drawings, and their influence in spreading the Rococo style and particularly the taste for chinoiserie throughout Europe.
In 1743, at the age of 15, he moved from Lyon to Paris where he was employed as an apprentice designer at the Gobelin factory. In 1745 he left for Spain, where he remained for 5 years. There he found employment in various cities as both a designer and painter. In 1750, at the age of 22, he moved to Lisbon, where he enjoyed continuing success. The lure of travel compelled him to decline an offer to become First Painter to King Joseph of Portugal ?, and in 1754 he left Lisbon for London. Pillement then spent eight years in England, fully exploiting the English taste for landscapes. In 1763 Pillement then traveled to Vienna, where he was employed at the Imperial Court of Maria Theresa and Francis I. In 1765 he left Vienna for Warsaw. He also later worked in Saint Petersburg, the Piedmont, Milan, Rome and Venice. 1768-1780 Pillement again worked in France, where he was employed by Marie Antoinette in the Petit Trianon. 1780-1789 he was once again on the Iberian Peninsula, and in 1789 moved to Pézenas in the Languedoc. In 1800 he returned to Lyon, where he continued to paint while also designing for the silk industry and giving lessons in the Academy founded by Napoleon. He remained in his native Lyon until his death in 1808.
Pillement's illustrations are a mixture of fantastic birds, flora & fauna, large human figures and chinoiserie. His designs were used by engravers and decorators on porcelain and pottery, but also on textiles, wallpaper and silver. Pillement had discovered in 1764 a new method of printing on silk with fast colours (recorded in his Memoirs). One of his prime vehicles was the single print marketed independently of an album. He published many albums, one is: Νvre de fleurs, ornements, cartouches, figures et sujets chinois (1776).

Tom Phillips, English painter, printmaker and collagist born in 1937 in London, where he continues to work.
From 1942 to 1947 Phillips attended Bonneville Road Primary School in Clapham. At seventeen, he won a travelling scholarship to France, and lived there for three months.
From 1958 to 1960 Phillips read English Literature and Anglo Saxon at St Catherine's College, Oxford. He attended life drawing classes at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, acted in plays and designed and illustrated the Isis magazine. Upon graduation he taught Art, Music and English at Aristotle Road School, Brixton, London. He also attended evening classes in life drawing (under Frank Auerbach), and sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts, where he became a full-time student in 1961.
Phillips became a teacher at Ipswich School of Art, where one of his students was Brian Eno, who would become a lifelong friend. The year of 1966 was important for Phillips. He exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition for the first time, started work on A Humument, and began collaborating with Brian Eno.
Phillips' best known work is A Humument: A Treated Victorian Novel originally by W.H. Mallock, alongside River of the Damned it became so popular it won an award for best innovation of Rivers. One day, Phillips went to a bookseller's with the express intention of buying a cheap book to use as the basis of an art project. He randomly purchased a novel called A Human Document by Victorian author William Hurrell Mallock, and began a long project of creating art from its pages. He paints, collages or draws over the pages, leaving some of the text peeking through in serpentine bubble shapes, creating a "found" text with its own story, different from the original. Characters from Mallock's novel appear in the new story, but the protagonist is a new character named "Bill Toge", whose surname can only appear on pages which originally contained words like "together" or "altogether". Toge's story is a meditation on unrequited love and the struggle to create and appreciate art.
Several editions of A Humument have been published over the years, with more and more pages being revised each time. The sixth and final edition was published in 2016.
By the late 1990s Phillips was an establishment figure in most aspects of the arts. He became a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, an Honorary Fellow of the London Institute, an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and a Trustee of the British Museum.
On May 26 is the birthday of
Aurel Băeșu, Romanian Impressionist landscape and portrait painter born in 1896. Many of his works show the influence of Nicolae Grigorescu; an influence that was common among painters of his generation.
From 1907 to 1912, he attended the "Alexandru Donici Gymnasium" in his hometown, where he displayed an aptitude for drawing. After graduating, he entered the Școala de Belle Arte in Iași, where he studied with Constantin Artachino and Gheorghe Popovici. In 1915, he received an award from the Academia Română for his portrait of the French artist Lecomte de Nöuy, who was then living in Romania.
During World War I, he was mobilized but, at the last moment, was sent to the rear, where he joined several other artists who were documenting the war. Although he escaped being wounded, the harsh conditions there led to a case of pneumonia that left him in poor health.
In an effort to improve his artistic perspectives, and with the support of members of the Academia, he went to Italy to attend a free painting course being taught at the Institute of Fine Arts in Rome. He was there from 1920 to 1922. Four years later, he travelled throughout Slovenia, Hungary and France. For many years, he was enamored of Lia Sadoveanu, the daughter of novelist Mihail Sadoveanu, but could never propose marriage because of his precarious financial situation.
In 1928, he died of tuberculosis, aged only thirty-two. A major retrospective of his work was held in 2006 at the art museum in Bacău. In 2012, his tomb was looted and destroyed. Among the items taken was a plaque by Băeşu's friend, the sculptor Mihai Onofrei.
Today, May 27, is the birthday of
Mario Avati, French painter and engraver born in 1921 in the Principality of Monaco, who lived and worked in Paris.
After studying at the National School of Decorative Arts in Nice and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Avati, practiced from 1947 with all printmaking techniques. Ten years later, was directed almost exclusively to the mezzotint, first in black, then, from 1969, in color. By doing so helped revive this graphical technique as a means of popular expression.
Many of his prints were used for the issuance of stamps. In 1980, the postal administration used his etching "Letter to Molly" for the "Day of the stamp 1980" commemoration.
Mario Avati was a member of the Society of French painters and engravers.
He died in 2009.
