George Hurrell, fotógrafo estadounidense nacido en 1904, que hizo una contribución significativa a la imagen de glamour presentado por Hollywood durante los años 1930 y 1940.
A finales de la década de 1920, Pancho Barnes presentó a Hurrell al actor Ramón Novarro, y accedió a tomar una serie de fotografías de él. Sus primeras fotografías fueron tomadas en su adolescencia y juventud, pero O'Neal no comenzó en serio con la fotografía en hasta 1969, cuando adquirió una cámara profesional y comenzó a documentar las sesiones de grabación y conciertos de jazz que estaba produciendo. Roberto Dutesco, fotógrafo canadiense de origen rumano nacido en 1961.
Ha estado revelando la belleza de la naturaleza y el espíritu humano a través de su fotografía desde hace más de tres décadas. La primera vez que supo de la Isla Sable y sus caballos salvajes fue en 1994, e hizo su primer viaje a la isla ese mismo año. Un peligroso viaje en avioneta desde Halifax y un desembarco en la playa le llevaron a ese lugar extraordinario. Con el tiempo, y con paciencia y respeto por estas criaturas vivientes que, en ausencia de depredadores naturales, se exhiben sin miedo a los humanos, aprendió los caminos de los caballos, y en el proceso se enamoró de la isla.

On June 1 is the birthday of
George Hurrell, American photographer born in 1904, who made a significant contribution to the image of glamour presented by Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s.
In the late 1920s, Hurrell was introduced to the actor Ramon Novarro, by Pancho Barnes, and agreed to take a series of photographs of him. Novarro was impressed with the results and showed them to the actress Norma Shearer, who was attempting to mould her wholesome image into something more glamorous and sophisticated in an attempt to land the title role in the movie The Divorcee. She asked Hurrell to photograph her in poses more provocative than her fans had seen before. After she showed these photographs to her husband, MGM production chief Irving Thalberg, Thalberg was so impressed that he signed Hurrell to a contract with MGM Studios, making him head of the portrait photography department. But in 1932, Hurrell left MGM after differences with their publicity head, and from then on until 1938 ran his own studio at 8706 Sunset Boulevard.
Throughout the decade, Hurrell photographed every star contracted to MGM, and his striking black-and-white images were used extensively in the marketing of these stars.
He died in 1992.

Rineke Dijkstra, Dutch photographer born in Sittard, 1959.
Dijkstra attended the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1981 to 1986. She then spent a few years working commercially, taking corporate portraits and images for annual reports.
Dijkstra concentrates on single portraits, and usually works in series, looking at groups such as adolescents, clubbers, and soldiers, from the Beach Portraits of 1992 and on, to the video installation Buzzclub/Mysteryworld (1996-1997), Tiergarten Series (1998-2000), Israeli soldiers (1999-2000), and the single-subject portraits in serial transition: Almerisa (1994-2005), Shany (2001-2003), Olivier (2000-2003), and Park Portraits (2005-2006).[3] Her subjects are often shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background. This compositional style is perhaps most notable in her beach portraits, which generally feature one or more adolescents against a seascape.[4] This style is again seen in her studies of women who have just given birth.

From this time on he led a rambling life through the cities and countryside of the Southeast, photographing blacks and whites, children at play, workers in the field, and scenes around home by the Eno. At the age of 16 Hugh Mangum was already a self-taught photographer. He had also achieved some mastery with oils and water-colors. He was musical, like others in the family, and could play the mandolin, accordion, and piano. It is said that he was accepted at Trinity College, later Duke, but it is uncertain whether he ever attended there. Instead he went to Winston-Salem to study art at Salem College.
He died in 1922.

At age 13 he lived a year with his Uncle and family in Yokohama, Japan. There he was given his first camera and became a member of the school’s photography club. His last two years in high school he worked as a photographer/laboratory assistant at the local newspaper, The Herald and News.
After a short tour of the Soviet Union in 1989 Oppenheimer soon returned to Leningrad to study Russian for a year at the University of Leningrad. Impressed by the events unfolding in the Soviet Union in 1991, he moved to Moscow in 1992 and found work as a photographer for Kommersant, one of the new generation of newspapers to appear on the wave of Perestroika. In Moscow he studied photography with Alexander Lapin. During the 1990s he also worked freelance for several leading western publications and photo agencies.
Oppenheimer (Opp) photographed a wide variety of social themes in Russia. He made several trips to the North Caucasus region during the First Chechen War and covered the Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis in 1995 and Pervomayskoye crisis in 1996 for Time magazine. He was an accredited photographer at the Russian State Duma and the Kremlin during the presidency of Boris Yeltsin.

Hank O’Neal, American music producer, author and photographer. He is equally well known in all these disciplines
His first photographs were taken as a teenager and young man but O’Neal didn’t begin to pursue photography seriously until 1969 when he acquired a professional camera and began documenting recording sessions and jazz concerts he was producing. He undertook his first project in rural East Texas during the years 1970-1973. These photographs led to his first exhibition in September 1973, at The Open Mind Gallery in New York City.
In the 1970s he became friendly and associated with a diverse group of photographers, notably Walker Evans, André Kertész and most importantly, Berenice Abbott, with whom he worked for the last 19 years of her life.
Between the years 1970 and 1999 in addition to undertaking many photographic projects, O’Neal also published numerous books related to photography. In 1999, at the urging of Evelyn Daitz, the gallery director, he had a major retrospective of his work to that point at The Witkin Gallery.
On June 6 is the birthday of
Roberto Dutesco, Romanian-born, Canadian photographer born in 1961.
He has been revealing the beauty of nature and the human spirit through his photography for more than three decades. He first learned of Sable Island and its wild horses in 1994 and made his first trip to the island that same year. A perilous journey by small plane from Halifax and a beach landing brought him to this remarkable place. Over time, and with patience and respect for these living creatures who, in the absence of natural predators, exhibit no fear of humans, he learned the ways of the horses and fell in love with the island in the process.
As Dutesco discovered the island for himself over the course of several visits, he captured the beauty and isolation of the wild horses and their austere habitat through still photography and 16-mm film. His incredible journey is presented in a full-length documentary entitled Chasing Wild Horses, which has aired many times on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and other media outlets in the U.S. and Europe.
In 2008, the Canadian government identified Sable Island as a protected national treasure under the Canada Shipping Act, Bill #227, as a result of Dutesco’s efforts. He says, “This legislation underscores the point that, if natural locations like this are to endure, they must be left alone. I have spent the last eighteen years dedicated to that belief and will continue to work for their preservation for the future.”
Today, June 7, is the birthday of
Tony Ray-Jones, English photographer born in 1941.
He studied at the London School of Printing, where he concentrated on graphic design. In the early 1960s he obtained a scholarship that enabled him to join Yale University School of Art on the strength of photographs he had taken in north Africa from a taxi window. Although only 19 on his arrival at Yale, Ray-Jones' talent was obvious, and in 1963 he was given assignments for the magazines Car and Driver and Saturday Evening Post.
Ray-Jones graduated from Yale in 1964 and photographed the United States energetically until his departure for Britain in late 1965.
On his arrival in Britain, he was shocked at the lack of interest in non-commercial photography, let alone in publication of books presenting it. He was also unsure of what subject he might pursue, but the idea of a survey of the English at leisure gradually took shape, and he was able to work on this and at the same time portrait and other work for the Radio Times, Sunday newspapers and magazines.
His photographs of festivals and leisure activities are full of a somewhat surreal humour and show the influence of photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Homer Sykes and his own collection of the work of Sir Benjamin Stone.
He died in 1972.
