El 1 de Agosto es el cumple de
Robert Thomas, escultor galés nacido en Cwmparc en el valle de Rhondda. Es conocido por su trabajo en esculturas de bronce, muchas de las cuales están en exhibición pública. Fue uno de los miembros del 'Grupo Rhondda'.

Mstislav Dobuzhinsky Valerianovich o Dobujinsky, artista ruso-lituano nacido en 1875, que destacó por sus paisajes urbanos que transmiten el crecimiento explosivo y la decadencia de la ciudad a principios del siglo XX.
Entre 1885 y 1887 asistió a la Escuela de Dibujo de la Sociedad para la Promoción de los Artistas. Gérard Calvet, escultor y pintor francés nacido en 1926.
Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de París desde 1945 hasta 1950. Fue alumno titular en el taller del pintor Eugène Narbonne. Su primera exposición la presentó en París con el escultor Georges Oudot. Durante un tiempo vivió pintando en el Barrio Latino de París hasta 1951, a partir de 1952 se instaló en Montpellier, donde ha residido y pintado.
Obtuvo el primer Premio Seyssaud en 1953, el segundo premio en la Bienal de Bayona, el premio de la Bienal de Menton y en el festival de Aviñón.
Sus obras se exhiben en el Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno de París, el Museo Real de Suecia en Estocolmo, el Museo Louisana Humleback de Dinamarca y en los museos de Montpellier, Niza, Rodez, Béziers, Narbonne, Sète, Frontignan y en el Hôtel Regional del Languedoc-Roussillon.

Domenico Morelli, pintor italiano nacido en 1823, que produjo principalmente obras históricas y religiosas. Morelli fue inmensamente influyente en el arte de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, tanto como director de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Nápoles, como también por su rebeldía contra las instituciones, rasgos que florecieron en los temas apasionados, a menudo patrióticos, románticos y de simbolismo tardío en sus lienzos.
Su talento precoz llamó la atención, y se matriculó en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Nápoles en 1836-1846, donde se hizo amigo de Francesco Altamura. Sus primeras obras contienen imágenes extraídas de las historias medievales y poetas románticos como Byron.

Fatih Gürbüz, artista turco nacido en Diyarbakir en 1985.
Vive y trabaja en Estambul. Asistió a la Diyarbakir Anatolia Bellas Artes High School y obtuvo una maestría en la Academia Nacional de Lviv de las Artes.

Jess Collins (Burgess Franklin Collins), conocido simplemente como Jess, artista visual nacido en Estados Unidos en 1923.
Fue reclutado por el ejército y trabajó en la producción de plutonio para el Proyecto Manhattan. Tras su licenciamiento en 1946, Jess trabajó en el Proyecto de Energía Atómica Hanford en Richland, Washington, y pintaba en su tiempo libre, pero su consternación por la amenaza de las armas atómicas le llevó a abandonar la carrera científica y concentrarse en su arte.
En 1949, Jess se inscribió en la Escuela de las Artes de California (ahora Instituto de Arte de San Francisco) y, después de romper con su familia, comenzó a referirse a sí mismo simplemente como "Jess". Conoció a Robert Duncan en 1951 y comenzó una relación con el poeta que duró hasta la muerte de Duncan en 1988. Rien Poortvliet, dibujante y pintor holandés nacido en 1932.
Fue conocido por sus dibujos de animales y por los "gnomos" en la famosa serie de libros con textos de Wil Huygen y publicados por Harry N. Abrams, Inc., de Nueva York.
La aptitud de Rien para el dibujo se manifestó desde el principio. Después de la educación primaria, el joven Rien trabajó en una agencia de publicidad, donde podía hacer algún uso de su talento. También tenía talento para la profesión de la publicidad porque después de haber completado su tiempo en la Marina ascendió a gerente senior de Lintas, agencia de publicidad de Unilever.

T Barny, escultor californiano nacido en 1956.
Posee y opera la T Barny Gallery & Sculpture Gardens y es instructor en Stone Simposios. Ha trabajado en todo tipo de material, incluyendo el bronce, la madera, el agua, el acero y el hielo, pero su pasión es la piedra. Conocido por su piedra mobius "Nudos celtas" y formas curvilíneas, T Barny ha ganado varios premios por "Mejor Obra", "Premio a la Excelencia", "Premio Elección del Editor" y del Museo de Arte de California un "Premio Adquisición ". On August 1 is the birthday of
Robert Thomas, Welsh sculptor born in Cwmparc in the Rhondda Valley. He is best known for his work in bronze sculptures, many of which are on public display. He was one of the members of the 'Rhondda Group'.
Having attended the Cardiff School of Art in the late 1940s, Thomas gained entry to the Royal College of Art in London and lived there until 1971. Between 1953 and 1971 he taught at various art schools including Gravesend, Maidenhead and Ealing before returning to Wales to live in Barry. Thomas received his first major commission in 1965, creating a bust of then Secretary of State for Wales, Jim Griffiths. This was followed by works of Lord Edmund Davies and Welsh comic and entertainer Ryan Davies.
Thomas received several commissions that are now public works of art, with permanent residency in major city centres. These include Hebe in Birmingham city centre and Aneurin Bevan in Cardiff. He has also produced busts, one of which, again of Aneurin Bevan, is located in the Houses of Parliament.
Thomas's Mother and Child sculpture, commissioned for the building of a new shopping precinct at Coalville, Leicestershire won him the Sir Otto Beit prize for 1963.
He died in 1999.

Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky or Dobujinsky, Russian-Lithuanian artist born in 1875, noted for his cityscapes conveying the explosive growth and decay of the early twentieth-century city.
From 1885 to 1887, he attended the Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of the Artists. Between 1895 and 1899, he read Law at the University of St. Petersburg, simultaneously studying in private studios. After graduating from the University, he was trained from 1899 to 1901 by Anton Ažbe in Munich and Simon Hollósy in Nagybánya (Austria-Hungary). In Munich, he came to be influenced by the Jugendstil. On his return to Russia, he joined the Mir Iskusstva, an artistic circle which idealized the 18th century as the "age of elegance".
Dobuzhinsky was distinguished from other miriskusniki by his expressionist manner and keen interest in modern industrial cityscapes. He often painted seedy or tragic scenes from urban life which expressed the nightmarish bleakness and loneliness of modern times. Among his works were also humorous vignettes and sketches with demon-like creatures which seemed to embody the monstrosities of urbanization.
Among his later works are series of masterful and dramatic illustrations, notably for Dostoyevsky's White Nights (1923) and Yuri Olesha's Three Fat Men (1925). Dobuzhinsky contributed sets for theatre productions in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Düsseldorf. During World War II, Dobuzhinsky painted imaginary landscapes of the besieged Leningrad.
He died in 1957.

Gerard Calvet, French sculptor and painter born in 1926.
He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1945 to 1950. He was a student started in the studio of painter Eugène Narbonne. His first exhibition was presented in Paris with the sculptor Georges Oudot. For a time he lived painting in the Latin Quarter of Paris until 1951, from 1952 he settled in Montpellier, where he has lived and painted.
He won first prize Seyssaud in 1953, second prize at the Biennial of Bayonne, the prize of the Menton Biennale and the one at the Avignon Festival.
His works are exhibited at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Royal Museum of Sweden in Stockholm, the Louisana Humleback Museum of Denmark and in the museums of Montpellier, Nice, Rodez, Beziers, Narbonne, Sète, Frontignan and the Hôtel regional Languedoc-Roussillon.

Domenico Morelli, Italian painter born in 1823, who mainly produced historical and religious works. Morelli was immensely influential in the arts of the second half of the 19th century, both as director of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, but also because of his rebelliousness against institutions: traits that flourished into the passionate, often patriotic, Romantic and later Symbolist subjects of his canvases.
His precocious talent was noted, and he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Naples in 1836–1846, where he befriended Francesco Altamura. His early works contain imagery drawn from the Medieval stories and Romantic poets such as Byron.
He participated in the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1855. Later, in Florence, he was an active participant in the Macchiaioli discussions on Realism. Morelli claimed that it was these discussions that made his own work less academic and helped him to develop a freer style and to experiment with color. In this period, he is grouped into the school of Realism.
He died in 1901.

Fatih Gurbuz, Turkish artist born in Diyarbakir in 1985.
He lives and works in Istanbul. He attended the Diyarbakir Anatolian Fine Arts High School and earned a masters degree from the Lviv National Academy of Arts.
On August 6 is the birthday of
Jess Collins (Burgess Franklin Collins), simply known today as Jess, American visual artist born in 1923.
He was drafted into the military and worked on the production of plutonium for the Manhattan Project. After his discharge in 1946, Jess worked at the Hanford Atomic Energy Project in Richland, Washington, and painted in his spare time, but his dismay at the threat of atomic weapons led him to abandon his scientific career and focus on his art.
In 1949, Jess enrolled in the California School of the Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) and, after breaking with his family, began referring to himself simply as "Jess". He met Robert Duncan in 1951 and began a relationship with the poet that lasted until Duncan's death in 1988. In 1952, in San Francisco, Jess, with Duncan and painter Harry Jacobus, opened the King Ubu Gallery, which became an important venue for alternative art and which remained so when, in 1954, poet Jack Spicer reopened the space as the Six Gallery.
Many of Jess's paintings and collages have themes drawn from chemistry, alchemy, the occult, and male beauty.
He died in 2004.
On August 7 is the birthday of
Rien Poortvliet, Dutch draughtsman and painter born in 1932.
He was best known for his drawings of animals and for "Gnomes" in the famous series of books provided with text by Wil Huygen and published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. of New York City.
Rien's aptitude for drawing showed early on. After primary education the young Rien worked at an ad agency, where he could make some use of his talent. He also had talent for the advertising profession because after he had completed his draft time in the Navy he rose to senior manager at Lintas, Unilever's ad agency.
Rien took more pleasure in the work he did on the side for several publishers. He illustrated various books, among them works by Jaap ter Haar (nl), Leonard Roggeveen (nl) and Godfried Bomans. He was also a passionate hunter, which led him to drawing various nature subjects.
By the end of the 1960s, Poortvliet was able to make a living as an independent illustrator. To supplement his income, he made a book out of his drawings and watercolours based on his hunting experiences. Later on, he also made a similar work concerning the life of Jesus Christ.
Poortvliet saw himself as a storyteller in drawings. His drawings told the tale, and at most he added a short caption.
He died in 1995.
Today, August 8, is the birthday of
T Barny, native California sculptor born in 1956.
He owns and operates the T Barny Gallery & Sculpture Gardens and is an instructor at Stone Symposiums. He has worked in every type of material including bronze, wood, water, steel and ice but his passion is for stone. Known for his stone mobius “Celtic Knots” and curvilinear shapes, T Barny has won various awards such as “Best Body of Work”, “Award of Excellence”, “Editor’s Choice Award” and from the California Museum of Art a “Purchase Award”. His exhibitions and awards span three decades and his pieces hold prestigious placement in collections internationally. He frequently gives talks about the art of carving with a diamond-tipped chain saw and the history of stone sculpture.
