Pécsi mantuvo vínculos duraderos con una comunidad de fotografía internacional. Estudió fotografía en el Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Instituto de Formación e Investigación) en Munich desde 1909 hasta 1911, y comenzó a recibir reconocimiento internacional poco después de su graduación. En 1911 regresó a Budapest y abrió su propio estudio, donde también ofreció instrucción a aprendices. En 1913 estableció el departamento de fotografía en la Escuela de Dibujo Industrial de Budapest, por lo que se le acredita como fundador de la educación de la fotografía en Hungría. Fue despedido de la enseñanza en 1920 debido a conflictos con el régimen político conservador, pero mantuvo su propio estudio, que sirvió de punto de reunión para estudiantes, entre los que se contaban Eva Besnyö y su amigo György Kepes.

En 1922 Pécsi fue elegido vicepresidente del Gremio Industrial de Fotógrafos de Budapest y trabajó como editor de la revista del gremio, Magyar fotográfia (fotografía húngara). En 1930 publicó el influyente libro Photo und Publizität (Fotografía y publicidad) para promover la mezcla de tipografía, diseño y fotografía en la publicidad de vanguardia, con contribuciones de Kepes y otros. La publicación marca su paso del estilo pictorialista de sus primeros trabajos al modernismo internacional ascendente del período de entreguerras. Los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se cobraron su peaje. Se escondió en Rumania por un breve período. Su estudio y negativos fueron destruidos por una bomba en 1945 y, a su regreso a Budapest en 1946, las dificultades financieras y un régimen desfavorable lo obligaron a tomar fotografías de pasaporte para llegar a fin de mes. Jeff Wassmann, artista, escritor y teórico estadounidense nacido en 1958, que actualmente reside en Melbourne (Australia). Su primera novela, "The Buzzard", fue publicada en 2012. La obra artística de Wassman incorpora ensamblaje, fotografía, nuevos medios basado en la web y aspectos de culture jamming.

Wassmann estudió la teoría postcolonial en la década de 1970 con el mentor, amigo y colega de Edward Said, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod, en el Instituto de Estudios Africanos de la Universidad de Northwestern en Chicago, donde se especializó en ciencias políticas y estudios internacionales. Como parte de su trabajo de curso en Northwestern, Wassmann estudió pintura con Ed Paschke y su entonces asistente Jeff Koons. Posteriormente estudió política parlamentaria en Wellington, Nueva Zelanda, antes de regresar a Chicago, donde trabajó como artista, escritor y fotoperiodista.
Varios acontecimientos en 1980 influirían en la decisión de Wassmann de dejar de lado una carrera planeada desde hace mucho tiempo en el cuerpo diplomático, embarcándose en cambio en el periodismo gráfico. En los años venideros Wassmann descubrirá la fotografía en blanco y negro de Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand y Lee Friedlander, mientras se desarrollaba una creciente influencia de las imágenes en color de William Eggleston, Joel Meyerowitz, Stephen Shore y Susan Meiselas.
Durante este período las fotografías de Wassmann aparecieron en publicaciones como The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Economist, Fortune y The Times (Londres). En los últimos años de la década Wassmann se dedicó a la fotografía callejera, tomando más de 10.000 diapositivas inéditas en Kodachrome, una obra que el artista tituló "Chicago en la Era Reagan". En marzo de 1989 emigró a Australia.
Como artista visual, Wassmann continúa trabajando bajo el seudónimo del pionero modernista alemán Johann Dieter Wassmann (1841-1898). Es el creador de dos instituciones igualmente ficticias: "The Wassmann Foundation", Washington, D.C. y el "MuseumZeitraum", Lepzig.

Johan van der Keuken, cineasta documentalista holandés, autor y fotógrafo nacido en 1938.
En una carrera que duró 42 años, Van der Keuken produjo 55 documentales, seis de los cuales ganaron ocho premios. También escribió nueve libros sobre fotografía y películas, su campo de interés. Por todos sus esfuerzos, recibió siete premios por la obra de toda una vida, y otro por sus fotografías.

LempertzFue aprendiz del artista Georg Schmidthammer en Linz. Habiendo dejado el taller para estudiar en la Colonia de Artistas de Darmstadt, se interesó por el manifiesto Bauhaus de Walter Gropius. LempertzEn 1928 Bayer dejó la Bauhaus para convertirse en director artístico de la oficina de Berlín de la revista Vogue. Permaneció en Alemania mucho más tarde que la mayoría de los otros progresistas. Robert Hamblin, fotógrafo sudafricano nacido en 1969. Trabaja y vive en Ciudad del Cabo.
Hamblin comenzó como fotógrafo comercial independiente, especializado en televisión y artes escénicas. Las artes lo influenciaron fuertemente y se pasó a la fotografía artística. Los primeros temas de su obra fueron principalmente de las artes. Su obra posterior se ocupa de cuestiones de género e identidad, y es el centro de gran parte de su trabajo actual.

No tuvo contacto con su padre biológico durante su infancia, creyendo que estaba muerto hasta los 13 años cuando su madre y Serge Gainsbourg se separaron, y en ese momento Barry volvió a establecer contacto con ella.
Tenía dos medio hermanas por parte de su madre: la actriz y cantante franceses Charlotte Gainsbourg y la actriz y cantante Lou Doillon.

"One afternoon all the doctors were away [Mieth told Loengard], and a little kid came running to me and said, "A monkey's in the water."
I came down, and that monkey was really going hell-bent for something. . . . I threw my Rolleiflex on my back and swam out. Finally, I was facing the monkey. I don't think he liked me, but he sat on that coral reef, and I took about a dozen shots."

Pécsi maintained lifelong ties with an international photography community. He studied photography at the Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Training and research institute) in Munich from 1909 to 1911, and began receiving international recognition soon after graduation. In 1911 he returned to Budapest and opened his own studio, where he also offered instruction to apprentices. In 1913 he established the photography department at the Budapest School of Industrial Drawing, for which he is credited as the founder of photography education in Hungary. He was dismissed from teaching in 1920 due to conflicts with the conservative political regime but maintained his own studio, which served as a gathering place for students, including Eva Besnyö and her friend György Kepes.
In 1922 Pécsi was elected vice president of the Budapest Industrial Guild of Photographers and served as editor of the guild’s journal, Magyar fotográfia (Hungarian photography). In 1930 he published the influential book Photo und Publizität (Photography and publicity) to promote the blending of typography, design, and photography in avant-garde advertising, with contributions from Kepes and others. The publication marks his crossover from the Pictorialist style of his early work to the ascendant international modernism of the interwar period. The World War II years took their toll: he hid in Romania for a brief period; his studio and negatives were destroyed by a bomb in 1945; and, upon his return to Budapest, in 1946, financial hardship and an unfavorable regime forced him to take passport photographs to make ends meet. His passion for photography and innovative spirit were not lost, however; in 1952 he patented a combined duplex Pigment print process under the name PEJO. —Kelly Cannon
On April 2 is the birthday of
Jeff Wassmann, American artist, writer and theorist born in 1958, currently living in Melbourne, Australia. His first novel, The Buzzard, was released in October 2012. Wassmann's art work incorporates assemblage, photography, web-based new media and aspects of culture jamming.
Wassmann studied postcolonial theory in the 1970s with Edward Said's mentor, friend and colleague, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod, at Northwestern University's Institute for African Studies in Chicago, where he majored in political science and international studies. As a part of his course-work at Northwestern, Wassmann studied painting with Ed Paschke and his then assistant Jeff Koons. He later studied parliamentary politics in Wellington, New Zealand before returning to Chicago, where he worked variously as an artist, writer and photojournalist.
Several events in 1980 would influence Wassmann's decision to sideline a long-planned career in the diplomatic corps, embarking instead on photojournalism. The most seminal was a visit to the exhibition Henri Cartier-Bresson: Photographer at the Art Institute of Chicago early in the year, a show that would have a profound impact on his vision as a photographer.
In the coming years Wassmann would discover the black and white photography of Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, while coming under the increasing influence of the color imagery of William Eggleston, Joel Meyerowitz, Stephen Shore and Susan Meiselas.
During this period Wassmann's photography appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Economist, Fortune and The Times (London). In 1984 his work took the notice of Philip Jones Griffiths, the Welsh photographer and then president of Magnum Photos, who put forward Wassmann's portfolio for nomination to the esteemed French photo agency.
In the closing years of the decade Wassmann dedicated himself to street photography, shooting over 10,000 unpublished Kodachrome slides in a body of work the artist titles Chicago in the Reagan Era. In March 1989, he emigrated to Australia.
As a visual artist, Wassmann continues to work under the nom de plume of the pioneering German modernist Johann Dieter Wassmann (1841–1898). He is the creator of two equally fictitious institutions, The Wassmann Foundation, Washington, D.C. and MuseumZeitraum Leipzig.
On April 3 is the birthday of
Torbjørn Rødland, Norwegian photographer born in 1970 in Stavanger.
He's known for portraits, still lives and landscapes that transcend their often banal settings and motifs and move into the otherworldly. Since the late 1990s, his work has been exhibited widely. It was included in the main exhibition of the 1999 Venice Biennale. The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo arranged a retrospective exhibition of Rødland’s work in 2003.
Public collections also include Fonds national d'art contemporain (Paris), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (Chicago), The Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City). After years of short stays in Tokyo, Beijing, Melbourne, Paris, Berlin, Oslo, Tallinn and New York City, Torbjørn Rødland has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 2010.
On April 4 is the birthday of
Johan van der Keuken, Dutch documentary filmmaker, author, and photographer born in 1938.
In a career that spanned 42 years, Van der Keuken produced 55 documentary films, six of which won eight awards. He also wrote nine books on photography and films, his field of interest. For all his efforts, he received seven awards for his life work, and one other for photography.
He began his career in photography at the age of 12. Five years later, in 1955, he published his first book of photographs, entitled zijn Wij 17 ("We are seventeen"). The following year, he attended IDHEC courses in Paris because, he said, "there were no scholarships for those who wanted to study photography", and began to make his first films. His photos and texts on film and photography were published in various magazines. He made a brief passage for Haagse Post as a film critic (1960-1961).
At the beginning of the decade of 1960, he was dedicated to the realization of documentaries, with a daring experimentation, and display of subjectivity. He filmed his own images, often with long takes, details, playing with repetition, movement, quickly emerging as a talented filmmaker. In the mid-1970s his popularity grew, and his work began to be shown in Montreal and Paris.
Johan van der Keuken's films have something organic. In a constant search, he reuses his images, juxtaposing them differently in different films, focusing on editing, to achieve a sensorial cinematic language.
He died in 2001.
On April 5 is the birthday of
Herbert Bayer, Austrian and American graphic designer, painter, photographer, sculptor, art director, architect, environmental and interior designer, born in 1900, who was widely recognized as the most innovative advertising designer of the Bauhaus School to which he belonged. His work stands out for the early introduction of photography in the 1920s.
He was apprenticed under the artist Georg Schmidthammer in Linz. Leaving the workshop to study at the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, he became interested in Walter Gropius's Bauhaus manifesto. After Bayer had studied for four years at the Bauhaus under such teachers as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and László Moholy-Nagy, Gropius appointed Bayer director of printing and advertising.
In 1928, Bayer left the Bauhaus to become art director of Vogue magazine's Berlin office. He remained in Germany far later than most other progressives. In 1936 he designed a brochure for the Deutschland Ausstellung, an exhibition for tourists in Berlin during the 1936 Olympic Games - the brochure celebrated life in the Third Reich, and the authority of Hitler. However, in 1937, works of Bayer's were included in the Nazi propaganda exhibition "Degenerate Art", upon which he left Germany. Upon fleeing Germany, he traveled in Italy.
In 1938 Bayer settled in New York City where he had a long and distinguished career in nearly every aspect of the graphic arts.
He died in 1985.
On April 6 is the birthday of
Robert Hamblin, South African photographer born in 1969. He works and lives in Cape Town.
Hamblin started as a freelance commercial photographer, specialising in television and the performing arts. The arts influenced him strongly and he became a fine art photographer. The early themes of his work were primarily sourced from the arts. Hamblin's later work is preoccupied with gender and identity and is the focus of much of his current work.
Hamblin's first exhibition in 1993 was a study of well-known South African women in which he made use of his relationships with women working in the dramatic arts. In 1995 he took a year off to take care of his father, who was dying of AIDS. This experience had a strong influence on his later work. His next exhibition, Millennium Man (1996), was an examination of the confrontation between men and perceived notions of masculinity in a world that has become more feminised. Gender, identities and the constructs of power are a strong thematic focus in Hamblin's work and Millennium Man was his first exploration of this theme.
The 90s saw Hamblin achieve success in the form of public recognition for his photography, he was reviewed in various print and digital publications and made various television appearances.
Hamblin transitioned from female to male at the age of 40 and is a vocal defender, activist and advocate of the rights of transgender persons, using his own life and career to lend visibility to the struggle. "Most of us understand what being lesbian, gay or bisexual is all about, but being transgendered is an issue that still has to come out of the closet," he said.
On April 7 is the birthday of
Alexandra "Ra" or "Lexie" Dreyfus, American director, photographer, writer, actress, singer, and video blogger born in 1986 in Los Angeles, California. She is best known for her work photographing celebrities, portraying Sarah Genatiempo in the Internet series lonelygirl15 and its spinoff LG15: The Resistance.
As a young adult she appeared in soap operas, commercials and on Barbie boxes, as the face of Mattel. She attended UCSB to study psychology, but in 2005, Alexandra moved to Germany, where she trained under a Vogue photographer.
She moved back to LA, and worked in production for Bully Pictures and Bullrun car rallies. Alexandra then went on to star on the webseries, Lonelygirl15 –
Thus launched a successful acting career in London, where she also wrote an opinion column for British magazine Dapper. She then went on to become a PR manager and head-writer in LA for Digital Playground, earning a Best Picture AVN Nomination for her script, Assassins.
For a time, Alexandra worked for Paris Hilton, after which she moved to New York City and developed a name for herself as fine art photographer, Ra Dreyfus.
Alexandra recently worked with the CEO and president of a marketing company, NCompasss International, in the development and production of events for blue chip clients such as Activision, CAA and Best Buy, and shows for artists including Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, and Joseph Arthur.
Two pieces from her fine art exhibition 'Demons' were featured in the Louvre in Paris.
On April 8 is the birthday of
Kate Barry, British fashion photographer born in 1967, who worked for Vogue and The Sunday Times Magazine.
Barry was the daughter of British actress and singer Jane Birkin and the composer John Barry. She moved from Britain to France as a child, and was raised by her mother and her partner Serge Gainsbourg. She had no contact with her biological father during her childhood, believing he was dead until she was 13 when her mother and Serge Gainsbourg separated at which point Barry re-established contact with her.
She had two half-sisters on her mother's side, French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg and actress and singer Lou Doillon.
Barry became addicted to drugs as a teenager. After recovering she set up a centre for recovering drug addicts in Paris. She is known for her intimate photographs of famous people. She worked frequently with her mother and sisters, and was also responsible for the album cover of Carla Bruni’s debut album Quelqu'un m'a dit.
On 11 December 2013, Barry died as a result of a fall from her fourth floor apartment in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, in what was assumed to be a suicide.
Today, April 9, is the birthday of
Hansel Mieth, German-born (as Johanna Mieth in Oppelsbohm, 1909) photojournalist who worked on the staff of LIFE Magazine. She was best known for her social commentary photography which recorded the lives of working class Americans in the 1930s and 1940s.
She ran away from home at the age of 15 and did factory work before emigrating to the United States in 1930 to join her lover and fellow photographer Otto Hagel (1909–1973). The couple found themselves in the midst of the Great Depression and worked as migrant farm labourers for several years. During that time they began to photograph the brutal working conditions and suffering they saw around them, after acquiring a second-hand Leica camera. In San Francisco, Sacramento, and in the rural towns they worked in, they photographed the bitter labour strikes and the working homeless. They were involved with the San Francisco Film and Photo League during the early 1930s, and began to sell their own photographs to magazines.
In 1937 Mieth joined the staff of LIFE Magazine (only the second woman photographer to do so), and she and Otto (whom she married in 1940), moved to New York. He was then still a German citizen, so in order to escape internment during the Second World War the couple fled to a remote ranch near Santa Rosa in northern California. Mieth continued to accept photography assignments for LIFE, while Hagel never left the Singing Hills Ranch.
During the War Mieth photographed Japanese Americans who had been taken from their homes and interned by the Roosevelt government. In the early 1950s, the couple's refusal to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee (where they would have been required to name names of their friends in the labour movement) led to Mieth's losing her job at LIFE, and to their being unofficially blacklisted. Shunned by their former friends, the couple retired to their ranch in California where they raised livestock and where Mieth took up painting. She died in Santa Rosa California in 1998.
Mieth's life story was told in a one-hour documentary titled Hansel Mieth: Vagabond Photographer, directed by Nancy Schiesari, which aired on PBS' Independent Lens series in 2003.
